HERE AND NOW: BREAD AND EVIDENCE

    EDVARD HARUTYUNYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In different historical periods, there have been staged social-cultural and artistic various practices (bread and scene, bread and faith, bread and ideology) in order to establish an institutional control over the masses’ sacred irrational passions (energy) and spiritual rational ambitions (will). Each of them is a unique culture of the organization and regulation of life, with the help of which the political elite tried and tries to subtly reduce the political drama nominated by the masses for participation in political life into the biological (bread) and artistic (scene) drama. And now, before our very eyes, a grotesque reality is being formed, a new scenario of public life is being staged, where the “here and now living” type of human requires neither a scene nor a faith and nor an ideology from the political elites. He demands an immediate solution to the problems that concern him – bread and evidence.

OBSERVATIONS CONCERNING THE PSYCHOANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY OF CULTURE

    SILVA PETROSYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In the article, an attempt is made to consider the psychoanalytic philosophy of culture in the context of the history of the philosophy of the XIX-XX centuries. Psychoanalysis is one of the most influential areas of psychology of the last century, in which philosophical generalizations about a person and culture are clearly traced. The article analyzes the teachings of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung on culture, the key concepts of these theories, and also presents some works, in particular, the work concerning Leonardo da Vinci. The article shows that psychoanalysis has changed the approach to a human as a cultural being, linking the psyche of a modern human with the whole history of mankind. The article also discusses the influence of the psychoanalytic concept of culture on the anthropological and philosophical thought of the last century, in particular, philosophical anthropology, Freudo-Marxism, etc. Some parallels with Armenian reality are also drawn.

SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING AS AN EFFICIENCY INDICATOR OF PUBLIC POLICY

    ARMAN GHARAGULYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

The pursuit of happiness is a human attributive feature. For centuries, philosophers have touched upon this topic, but there are relatively few works where happiness is seen as an object of public policy. In recent decades, the development of methods for measuring subjective well-being has evolved, thereby integrating new performative indicators into policies along with classic economic approaches. The article analyzes the conceptual apparatus of such studies, the relationship between “happiness” and “well-being” (economic and subjective), examples of theoretical and successful political initiatives, and further prospects for such studies.

    “BORDER” AS A PHILOSOPHICAL CATEGORY

    MOVSES DEMIRTSHYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the meaning of the concept “border” in the social and humanitarian studies. It is difficult to imagine a complete modern study of any field or area of social life that is not related to the phenomenon of border, its features, and significance in one way or another. The article argues, that for a long time in the history of philosophy the border has not been considered as a separate and unique “space”, but as a dividing line, beyond which a phenomenon turns into its opposition (existence and non-existence, knowledge and ignorance, etc.). M. Bakhtin’s new understanding of the border showed, that the emergence of new meanings and values in culture is connected not only with the evolutionary development of the culture but also with the dialogue with other cultures, which takes place at a time when two or more cultures meet at the border. The border in philosophical-cultural studies has gained the status of a meaningful fact, as it has been substantiated that subjects on both sides of the border (cultures, societies, epochs, specific people, etc.) discover previously unknown, hidden meanings, values, and perspectives through dialogue. This is due to the fact that the dialogue in the border situation is carried out by answering “Other’s” questions. This process can be presented in the following formula: "Only by answering the “you” addressed to me, I become “I”. It is obvious that this is directly related to one of the central issues of social philosophy, which is identity and implies a new interpretation of it. The border in the social and humanitarian research has gone through several stages of understanding, considered as a physical border, and then as a symbolic and ritual phenomenon, and then as a text. The article shows that the border performs the functions of a “border guard” and “filter” in all forms, preserving the individuality of the culture and ensuring the reproduction of identity. It is most evident in the revival of national cultures under the influence of modern globalization, which is exactly a process of restoring or strengthening endangered cultural boundaries.
