The Behavior of the Heroes of the Armenian Epos in the Context of Armenian Identity

    Seyran Zakaryan
    View PDF
    Abstract

In the article the author analyses and evaluates approaches and positions of heroes of the Armenian epos (Sanasar, Baghdasar, Mher the Great, David of Sassoun, Mher the Minor) concerning ethical values, enemy, government, society, and homeland. The author argues in favor of a statement that both in the epos and in the Armenian Identity is enrooted the approach to rethink and evaluate reality predominantly in terms of moral concepts (debt, responsibility, justice, conscience, shame, etc.); and to evaluate other people’s behavior and other moral systems by own moral criteria instead of using legal, political, economic and other forms of behavior regulation and evaluation. And as a result of all of these in the epos and Armenian national character we see humanism without borders, generosity towards the enemy, unguarded, reckless openness and unforgivable tolerance; the absence of the will to govern, to own, escapism and xenophilia.

The Shadowed Identity as a Social-Cultural Quality of “The Man of the Crowd”

    Levon Babajanyan

    Abstract

In the article, the history of the civilisation is observed as a history of man and society rationalisation. One of the breaking (crucial) points in the rationalisation of the civilization was the modernisation enlightening project. However, as a result of some civilizational, anthropological, and political transitions, enlightening project of modernisation is split between cultural and civilisation modernisation projects, because of which occurs a disproportion between society’s cultural and civilisation rationalities. This finally leads to the formation of mass society, where the 34 main character of socio-cultural relations becomes the so-called “the man of the crowd”. Appearing on the stage of civilisation based on rationality the man of the crowd, however, illustrates the irrational socio-cultural behaviour. The point is that the man of the crowd has shadow qualities suppressed because of transition from pre-civilization to civilization state, alienated, closed in the prison of unconsciousness. As an implication of realisation of the modernisation project, the shadowed identity of a man which is alienated by rationality becomes a socio-cultural quality of the man of the crowd.

The Future as a Construction Project of the Social World

    Meri Mikayelyan
    View PDF
    Abstract

It is very difficult to imagine an era, the representatives of which wouldn't think about their future through filling the gaps of present with projects of future. In the article, the utopia is submitted as a project of future construction, which is the embodiment of expectations, the aspiration to vital transformations and the statement of alternatives. Utopian projects are results of social imagination, which appeal social aspirations and dangers to life as a demonstration of the possible. The image of the desired future of that society depends on the degree of development, valuable system and moral guidelines. In the modern world, parallel with an acceleration of a vital rhythm, the utopian projects mostly belong to a short-term outlook. They attempt to provide for a person certain reference points in the unstable social world.

    Abstract

Imre Lakatos, identifying the problems of demarcation and the growth of science, argues that it is necessary to assess not the separate theories but the changes taking place in the scientific mosaic. The steps which contribute to the increase of the empirical content, are considered to be progressive, i.e. scientific, while the steps that reduce the empirical content are considered to be regressive, i.e. non-scientific.

    Tatevik Pirumyan
    View PDF
    Abstract

The article discusses tolerance as a way of constructing socialcultural space. Tolerance can serve as a main factor for modelling a society. Globalization influences all aspects of modern social reality. Crosscultural communication becomes inseparable of social communication, its main concepts (the opposition ownother, conflict, stereotypes, tolerance) getting the new content under sociocultural specific nature. With the increasing migration, society faces a serious problem of socialcultural tolerance towards migrants.

Habitus of the German Intellectual of the 1930s and the Sources of the Anti-Intellectual

    Tigran Simyan
    View PDF
    Abstract

The article traces the ethical model of "hostintellectual" by the example of Erich Kastner. The typological analysis demonstrates that the source of the anti-intellectual can be seen in Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince", as well as in Shakespeare’s "Othello". The "host-intellectual" – the ethically responsible intellectual - indicates a problem in the political sphere, while by his altruistic behavior implicitly or explicitly "illustrates" immoral, irresponsible "punctures" and flaws on the board of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. The analysis showed that the true "hostintellectual" by his behavior (habitus) becomes an indicator, a "touchstone" that expresses the painful symptoms (and even diagnoses!) a society.
