The paper presents a brief history of formation of the theory of intercultural communication – a relatively young branch of science. Special attention is paid to the major issues of intercultural communication and basic directions of research in this field, to the principles of linguistic determinism and relativism, to the main levels of analysis of culture in the American Communication Studies, etc. The author brings to light such new areas of the theory of intercultural communication as cultural imperialism, globalization of culture, media ecology.
