Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the linguistic study of Orwellian Doublethink and Newspeak as powerful discursive and linguistic tools of political manipulation presented in the novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. The paper first presents language as the most powerful and effective tool used in political manipulation, elucidates Doublethink as a means of linguistic manipulation viewed in contrast with cognitive dissonanse, which then serves as a firm foundation for expounding its more detailed psychological, mental, and social characteristics, and proceeds to the description Newspeak as a cognitively more effective linguistic tool for political manipulation.
