GIS-BASED GEOTOURISM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT: CASE STUDY OF VOGHJABERD–GEGHARD AREA, ARMENIA

Abstract

This article assesses the geotourism potential of the Voghjaberd–Geghard area (Armenia) using GIS technologies and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). The assessment is based on an analysis of the relief, transport accessibility, hydrography, and spatial distribution of natural and cultural sites. The results revealed high potential for geotourism development in the Voghjaberd–Geghard area and allowed the identification of three geotourism clusters. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of using GIS and MCAD for assessing territories, planning sustainable geotourism development, and identifying sensitive areas.
