Principles of Structural Functionalism in Political Genesis

Structural functionalism was one of the most influential sociological paradigms of the 20th century. At its core is the principle that political, economic, religious, and moral phenomena are functionally interconnected; that is, changes in one of these spheres inevitably lead to transformations in the others. Within this conceptual framework, the emergence of political structures is interpreted as a functional response to systemic needs: as society grows more complex, new mechanisms of regulation become necessary, resulting in the development of political institutions. While this approach made a substantial positive contribution to sociological theory, it was subsequently criticized, particularly for its inadequate explanation of processes of social change and its insufficient analysis of social conflict.
