Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present phraseological expressions as an integral and distinctive part of every language, demonstrating the peculiarities of their usage across different layers of the language. As in any language, in Azerbaijani as well, idioms endow the language with a unique vitality and expressiveness, while simultaneously encapsulating the ethnolinguistic realities, national linguistic worldview, traditions, and customs of the people. By analyzing the structural, semantic, and stylistic characteristics of idioms, the study highlights their role in reflecting a nation's ethno-linguistic consciousness, historical evolution, and socio-cultural interactions.  The research also focuses on the semantic classification of idioms—categorizing them into groups. The study includes an appendix featuring Azerbaijani phraseological units formed with the word "baş" (head), provided with literal translations and their corresponding Armenian equivalents. The study concludes that phraseology remains a dynamic, living layer of language that continuously adapts to social and communicative shifts.
