Before Anton Popovič: Silenced Voices of Slovak Translation Studies

This article examines the formative but largely overlooked contributions of Zora Jesenská and Jozef Felix to the emergence of Slovak Translation Studies prior to the work of Anton Popovič. Situating their ideas within the political and cultural constraints of twentieth-century Slovakia, the study demonstrates how their practice-based reflections on translation anticipated key concepts later systematized by Popovič. By contextualizing their work within the socialist period and its ideological interventions, the article highlights these silenced voices as crucial predecessors whose theoretical and practical insights significantly shaped the development of Slovak Translation Studies.
