    Discourse Analysis at the Crossroads of Disciplines

    Abstract

    The article serves as an introduction to the special issue of the journal touching upon discourse as an object of research with a focus on the notions of rhetoric and literature as an example of interdisciplinarity. The author provides a brief overview of the topics covered during the conference.

    Contradictive Russian Political Speech on Migrants

    Abstract

    The Russian multicultural policy is reflected in two dimensions: in relation to indigenous peoples and to migrants coming mainly from the post-Soviet territory. Despite the fact that post-Soviet migration has existed for three decades now, the corresponding political strategy has been implemented late. It is sometimes incoherent, sometimes disorderly, which impacts the formation of public opinion on this highly topical issue and the forms of interaction between the local population and migrants. The study focuses on official contradictive discourses concerning the image of migrants and the policy of their integration into Russian society.

    Official Discourse versus Indigenous Voices? Russian Narrative and Life Stories from the Siberian (Far) North

    Abstract

    Due to its territorial expansion over the centuries, Russia has constantly incorporated the most diverse peoples and languages. At a time when the Federation wants to find a great national narrative, the authorities put forth the necessity “to protect historical truth” (Article 67.1 § 3 of the Constitution) to impose a memory policy, to the exclusion of all others. Thenceforth, the monopoly of the State on history, promoted by institutions of historical propaganda and passed on throughout society, condemns the silencing of the unedited memory of communities that do not have the same reading of past events. This is why, through a historical and anthropological approach based on old sources and the word collected in the tundra and taiga until 2019, the point will be to put into perspective the Russian national narrative, thanks to the reading of the minority indigenous peoples of (sub)Arctic Siberia.

    Legislative Discourse and Prohibited Discrimination Criteria: What Is Not Well Stated Cannot Be Well Qualified

    Discrimination is the difference in treatment based on criteria prohibited by law. It appears that the choice of criteria, as well as the way in which they are called by the legislator and then recognized by the courts is influenced by the discourse of the political powers in place. The article will focus in particular on the ambiguities relating to discrimination based on origin. The legislator is unable to sanction discrimination based on origin because it cannot qualify it without the power in place providing any key to do so. This results in difficulties in interpreting the criteria linked to origin expressed in the form of an unsatisfactory list. Solutions can be provided, in particular by clarifying the latter and by giving the generic term “racial and racist” discrimination.

    Abstract

    The analysis of two Arab media outlets, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, makes us shape a different opinion about the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the United States. This recognition is that the conflict over the city between Israelis and Palestinians is turning into geopolitical tension at the regional level in addition to its internal dimension, which concerns the practice of politics in the United States.

    Colonial Discourse in Deposited Germany of Its Colonies: Claims for the Recovery of Lost Colonies in the Weimar Republic

    The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 stipulated that the German overseas colonies should be placed under the mandate of the League of Nations, which would hand them over to other colonial powers for administration. Not only did Germany feel humiliated by this paragraph of the peace treaty, but it also felt that this measure was only temporary and was to maintain an administrative system as if it still had colonies. To this end, numerous texts were published in which the return of the colonies was demanded. For example, Franz Ritter von Epp emphasized the absolute necessity of having colonies for the economy of Nazi Germany. The former colonial official, Heinrich Schnee, in his text “Does Germany Need Colonies?” demands the return of the former German overseas territories after having first discussed all the positive aspects of colonization such as building schools, hospitals, and the necessity of having colonies for German foreign trade and for solving demographic problems. The colonial discourse of the communist Martin Hoffmann is diametrically opposed to that of Heinrich Schnee and Franz Ritter von Epp. He condemns the acquisition of colonies, the exploitation of their inhabitants and raw materials, and shows that owning colonies is not necessary for the economic prosperity of the motherland.

    Abstract

    The article presents the plan and spatial composition of the Tsakhkavank church in the village of Tsakuri, Hadrut region of the Republic of Artsakh, as well as the construction inscriptions in Armenian written on the walls. Today, the church is occupied by Azerbaijan, which, ignoring all the facts, is conducting a clear policy of eradicating the Armenian cultural and historical traces from the territory of Artsakh, threatening to eliminate and delete the inscriptions of the Armenian churches of Artsakh. The example of Tsaghkavank emphasizes the policy of falsification of regional history, which is a part of the institutionalized anti-Armenian discourse in Azerbaijan.

    Wall Street on Screen or How American Movies Impact the Representation of Finance

    Abstract

    What does the American movie industry tell us about the economic role of Wall Street and the perception of the stock market over time? Through a substantial corpus of American films from the 20c. and 21c, this article illustrates how, in three distinct periods, Hollywood has been able to stage finance and contribute to the myth of Wall Street. A minor subject until the 1980s, these years have seen the appearance of financial blockbusters with the rise of the financialization of the economy. The subprime crisis renews the genre, questioning the place of the stock market and the ethics of traders.

    Hollywood cinema has often been defined as an “entertainment industry”, a term, which deduces a status quo in relations to politics. Contrary to the statement, Hollywood films are very much politically orientated with narratives that run through most productions and promote a particular perception of American society. The Production Code that was put in place in 1930 and imposed self-censorship was a major catalyst in relation to politics of filmmaking in Hollywood.

    Abstract

    The Lark Farm (2004) by Antonia Arslan, an Italian author of Armenian origin, was both a bestseller and a highly valued literary piece for Italians. Retracing the events of 1915, in Anatolia, the novel tells the story of the writer's family, between Italy and her native country, at a fateful moment in history. The uncle in the romantic fiction was in fact the grandfather of the author-narrator, hence the work of memory recovery of the history of his family on the part of Arslan, which leads to the denunciation of the Armenian genocide. Following the phenomenal success of the book, the filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani also looked into the question of the Armenian genocide and produced their cinematographic work in 2007.     The analysis of the staggering video of Éric Zemmour’s declaration of candidacy for the 2022 presidential election—broadcast via his YouTube channel then relayed virally on social networks—explores the sources of the falsification of media discourse, their social representation and their influence on imagination. It is a question of understanding the processes of writing implemented to divert historical facts and counterfeit history. Between reality and fiction, political communication seeks and experiments with new strategies. But how will the digital society impose the definition of a shared ethical framework in order to avoid such abuses?

    Culturemes: Difficulties in Cultural Unit Translation: Study on the Works of Hrant Matevosyan

    Abstract

    The study of literary texts has long been dominated by structuralism. At present, it has entered a new phase, known as discourse. In this article, starting from the mentioned concept, we will focus on translation as an activity that requires not only linguistic skills but also deep cultural knowledge. To consider the size of the phenomenon, we will first study the criteria that need to be taken into account when it comes to translation. The literary text can be considered a way of access to social codes and cultural models because, regardless of its language of expression, it represents the values shared between one culture and another. The attention paid to the intercultural dimension is obvious in the thinking of translators. In our article we will try to show that literature, considered one of the essential biases of intercultural communication, can also lead to an intercultural “conflict”. To that end, we will study and analyse the translation of the works of Hrant Matevosyan Mesrop and Autumn Sun. Indeed, the translator often fails to fill in the gaps, because certain phenomena do not exist in the target language. In the following analysis, we will try to show the translation procedures that the translator of Hrant Matevosyan uses and why certain cultural units remain untranslatable. For the following, we will try to show how a translator can overcome certain cultural obstacles in translation.

    Vittoria Aganoor, the Dreamed and Unknown Armenia

    Abstract

    This work concerns the Italian poet Vittoria Aganoor (1855-1910), daughter of Edoardo Aganoor, an aristocrat of Armenian origin. His tutor, Father Zanella, a great poet and pedagogue, detected his poetic talent in his youth. Since the 1870s, she published poems in literary journals. Her first book was released in 1900 and was a great success, but she was already praised by the critics and well-known by the public. Her father refused teaching her Armenian. The frustration linked to this “denied language” will accompany him throughout his life. She will not be able to learn Armenian in her youth because of the inexplicable refusal of her father, and when she was finally free to do so, she was too old. Armenian will forever remain a foreign idiom that does not belong to her: a part of herself has thus been taken away from her and will no longer find her words. Incommunicability and denied language are an integral part of his poetics, and appear in other writings, notably his letters.

    Abstract

    Theater plays a key role in the novel “Sylvie. Memories of Valois” by Gerard de Nerval and in the story “Clean Monday” by Ivan Bunin. In both works, the theater is present as the tangible place of the stage creation and at the same time as the stage of external imagination. In both works, the experience of the theater of appearances comes down to the search for an inner, unseen stage, manifesting itself in similar leitmotifs and questions. In both poems, that transition is entrusted to a female character. This study is devoted to the relationship between two novels.

    Abstract

    Although Natalia Ginzburg spent all her life in devoted literary and scientific circles, she always wrote texts without the aid of any intellectual filters. Her need to underline her “ignorance” was a genuine leitmotif in her work, which manifested itself in the form of negations and oppositions. For her, the deep meaning of any discourse did not reside exclusively in what we know, but also in what we do not know. Unknowing thus becomes part of knowing, while revealing the inadequacy of writing to encapsulate reality as a whole.

    Polyphony of the Modal Subject in Mythopoetic Discourse

    Abstract

    The modalization of the mythopoetic enunciation transforms the lyrical subject into a modal subject, which finds its place in the paratopic space expressed through the aquatic element, which plays a role in the progressive erasure of the poetic self, attested from the Baroque period, and led to its absolute elocutory disappearance in surrealist poetry. This dynamic of the metamorphoses of the modal subject in mythopoetic texts is analysed on the example of the poems of Saint-Aimant, Tristan l’Hermite and André Breton.

    The aim of this paper is to study the perception and the interpretation of a poetic discourse of hermetic nature by the reader. The perception and analysis of this type of discourse implies a complex decoding process of an intentionally encoded text by its author. The paper focuses on the methods and tools proposed by eminent linguists and semioticians in the context of sign processes.
