    Abstract

Linguistic devices, which are used in advertising discourse as means of speech impact, not only complete ads’ message, but also facilitate speech impact with the help of distinctive content, structure and usage frequency. Since the language of advertising is characterized by its persuasive function, the creators of ads spare no effort to make them catchy, fascinating and witty. Precisely for this reason the metaphorical devices used in English media discourse are of utmost importance as they give birth to mental tension and a sense of relief after comprehension. This process enhances the effectiveness of an ad.

    Hamlet ARAKELYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In the scope of medialinguistics advertising discourse performs a specific functional style as the language of advertising is unique and rather peculiar in comparison with other elements of media discourse. The effectiveness of advertising media discourse mostly depends on catching the attention of the target audience. This is why various linguistic devices are used not only to facilitate the comprehension of advertisements, but also to enhance the connection between the influencer and the target audience with the help of specific aspects of ads’ content and structure. In this regard, both graphical and syntactic groups of linguistic means are of utmost importance, as their intentional usage ensures the persuasiveness of ads’ texts. The mentioned linguistic means become more effective when they are intentionally used alongside such parts of speech as verbs and adjectives.

    Abstract

The present paper aims to reveal the syntactic patterns of English tautological structures, and to examine their functional-communicative peculiarities in line with Gricean Principle of Cooperation. By virtue of their simple predicative structure, tautologies save the speaker’s/writer’s time and efforts in the process of speech production, whereas, on the plane of content, they possess a multilayered semantic potential. The analysis shows that the speaker/ writer opts for the given syntactic pattern of tautology in accord with their communicative intention in the given speech situation.

The practical purpose of the study is to help teachers apply some of the methods and techniques proposed below, to promote CT and ensure higher quality teaching results.
