“THE BATTLE OF TAKSIM”: CITY SQUARE AS AN OBJECT OF POLITICAL STRUGGLE IN REPUBLICAN TURKEY

Taksim Square is one of the central political symbols of Turkey. Throughout the history of the Turkish Republic, different political actors have struggled to transform this square according to their political ideologies and discourses. In this article, we will examine the main important periods in the history of Taksim Square and its significance in Turkish political culture. This will allow us to understand the place and role of the symbol in contemporary Turkish political life.
