    The Philosophical Basis and the Semantic Nuances of the Literary Symbol «(The) Wall»

    Abstract

    The article examines the works of writers of different nations and different times entitled “The Wall” (L. Andreev, J. P. Sartre, Abe Kobo, L. Khechoyan, G. Khanjyan). An attempt is made to discover that, regardless of the differences in themes, the content, the individual style of the authors, the wall symbol expresses quite close meanings based on the philosophy of existentialism. The novel of the same name by the Japanese writer Abe Kobo is significantly different: the wall plays a different role in all three parts, expressing the absurdity of reality in all cases.

    Some Questions of Hamo Sahyan's Poetic Mastery

    Abstract

    The article is dedicated to a number of issues of Hamo Sahyan's poetic mastery, one of the most prominent figures of Armenian poetry of the 20th century. In particular, the manners with which the poet creates uncommon rhymes with unique sounds are considered. In his articles and private conversations, Hamo Sahyan has always emphasized the importance of the first line in the poem, which dictates the course and rhythm, as well as the rhyme of the next lines. We can not find in any other Armenian poet’s verse as many female, dactylic rhymes as in Sahyan's poetry. In many of his poems, he used rhymes typical of Eastern poetry, where there are midline base words and a word group following them. This shows that Sahyan treated the art of rhyme with special care and the abundance of rhymes, not so typical for our traditional poetry, distinguishes his poetry from the others.

    A Hypothesis about Vahagn's Mythological Image

    Abstract

    Relying on Agatangeghos and Movses Khorenatsi (both 5th c.), Vahagn, one of the great pre-Christian deities in Armenian mythology, the deity of war, with his mythological description, was combined with deities of both sun and thunderstorm. Due to its connection with the cosmic elements and the dragon fight, it was mostly perceived as the deity of thunderstorm, who, particularly in the Indo-European context, was identi39 fied with Indra and Heracles. The current paper, for the first time, circulates and examines from the folk studies the aspects, the motif of the lira playing attributed to Vahagn in the “History” of the 10th Century Historian Hovhannes Draskhanakertsi. It is shown that Vahagn, who is in some respects comparable to the image of the lira player Apollo, is similar to him with one more quality. Considering the similarity of the motives of Apollo’s and Vahagn's lira playing, a possible hypothesis is being developed that in the ancient version of Vahagn's legend he was a lira player who fought against dragons or monsters with his lira. Later, either because of the gradual darkening of the mythical memory or due to the development of people’s rational thinking, that motive has gradually weakened, faded but has not completely been forgotten and, as a mythic remnant, reached the 10th century and was passed from people to Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi. It is not excluded either that, due to the ‘cultural dialogue and heritage’, the aforementioned legend on Apollo, perhaps only after Khorenatsi, was included in the local milieu orally and was associated with Vahagn’s name.

    The Imperative in Classical Armenian from a Typological and Historical Perspective.

    It is a common knowledge that the Imperative has a special form mainly for the second person singular in Classical Armenian, showing a variety of formations and sometimes doublets (especially, in the mediopassive inflection. cf. իմա­նամ, ացայ – իմա՛/իմա՛ց/իմացի՛ր, լուանամ, ացայ – լուա՛/լուացի՛ր, խօսիմ, եցայ – խօ­սեա՛/խօ­սեա՛ց). Based on a synchronic and diachronic analysis of the relevant evidence from Classical Armenian, an assumption is made that the same aorist stem (with the stem-final -cc having been dropped in polysyllabic -cc-aorist stems) was initially employed as a 2nd sing. imperative in both active and mediopassive inflection after the loss of post-tonic syllables in Pre-Written Armenian. Later, the polysyllabic -cc-aorist stem with the analogically restored final-cc as well as the root/-cc-aorist stem plus the ending -ir (ի՛ր) came to be used in the meaning of the 2nd sing. mediopassive imperative in order to differentiate between active and mediaopassive imperative forms, and partly due to system pressure and analogical extension. Therefore, the active forms of the 2nd sing. imperative of a number of middle/mediopassive verbs in Classical Armenian (cf. նստիմ, նստայ – նի՛ստ, դառ­նամ, դար­ձայ – դա՛րձ, լուանամ, ացայ – լուա՛ etc.), should be regarded as relict forms retained owing to the high frequency of use.

    Morphological Characteristics of the Ancient Armenian Translation of "The Book of Fasting" by Basil of Caesarea

    Abstract

    The famous collection of speeches, conversations, sermons and interpretations of Basil of Caesarea "The Book of Fasting" was translated into the Ancient Armenian language at the end of the 5th to the 7th century, by translators of the period of the Hellenizing school. The language of the Armenian original is figurative and understandable, there are no newly created artificial structures typical of the Greek language. The translators of The Book of Fasting were fluent in both Ancient Greek and their native language. Studying the grammatical features of the language of the Ancient Armenian text proves that Grecisms, tracings of Greek origin are found in the system of  conjugation, especially in the formation of participles and their individual passive constructions, and the declension system of nouns, adjectives and numerals basically corresponds to the grammatical rules of the Ancient Armenian literary language, tracing of Greek the origins are not significant.

    Observations on forensic linguistics

    Abstract

    Forensic linguistics is a newly emerging field in Armenia. Developed and implemented in a practical environment, it has remained neglected in developing and implementing theoretical provisions, in the issues of methodology, training experts, and others. As an interdisciplinary phenomenon, it lacks a sufficient amount of elaboration; the structural and content features to perform an examination are not clearly described. The law poses some unsatisfactory requirements and criteria for an expert. Given the importance of the phenomenon, there is currently a need to develop and improve the field of linguistic expertise, in particular, to introduce a sound system for training linguistic experts.

    The grabarisms in Sayat-Nova’s poems

    Abstract

    Sayat-Nova, an eighteenth-century Armenian ashugh and poet, who wrote poems in Tiflis dialect, in his compositions used the Classical Armenian language elements. This paper is considered to the linguistic analyze of these elements, which are called grabarisms. The Classical Armenian forms of Sayat-Nova's poetry are discussed in three groups: 1․phonetic, 2․lexical-grammatical, 3․syntactic. The lexico-grammatical units of Classical Armenian are most widely used in the poetry of Sayat-Nova, which give originality to the language of Sayat-Nova’s poetry and they are one of its peculiarities.

    Distant Realization of Valency of Compound Component

    Abstract

    The valency of a component with verb semantics included in a German substantive compound can receive a distant realization in the text. This process has a direct effect on text formation. The study is based on modern fiction, mass media texts, and legislative acts. Distantly explicated arguments can be represented by separate words or built in the structure of another compound. In the case of filling several valencies, a combination of distant realization of some arguments and inclusion of other arguments in the direct syntactic environment of the compound is possible. A text indication of distant realization of an argument is possible, which is a specific characteristic of the legislative discourse.
