The System of Conjugation of Old Armenian according to G. Jahukyan

    NAIRA PARONYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

According to G. Jahukyan Old Armenian has preserved the main peculiarities of the Indo-European type. For the Indo-European language- the bases restore two types of conjugation: athematic and thematic. The Old Armenian System of Conjugation appears in two main types: bases on the vowels ո, ա, ի, ու (thematic types) and the bases on sonatas ն, ր, ղ (athematic). Jahukyan considers, that in some cases there are no special difficulties in establishing the belonging to this or that type of
conjugation. Thus, it is very easy to establish the types of word conjugations, ending in– ի, -(ը)ր –(ը)ղ. According to him, difficulties arise for the words which end in ո, ի/ա,ի, ու, ն. In these cases it is possible to establish the following rules: 1) the rule of the quantity of the syllables 2) the rule of assimilation impact 3) the rule of dissimilation impact 4) the rule of semantic grouping 5) the rule of functional differentiation 6) the rule of domination in case of crossing 7) the rule of doublets in case of crossing.

Neologisms as a Result of Partof- Speech Transformation and Transposition

    AREN SANTOYAN, LILIT PETROSYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In Linguistics, the term transformation is regarded as a part-of-speech transposition of the same meaning not only through
different grammatical structures but also through different lexical means and ways. Neologisms are incessantly formed in the language. They are formed according to external special word building transfers – verb>noun, noun>verb, verb>adjective and
    sentence>word.
Neologism compounds can be regarded as authorial transformation results of secondary clauses, word combinations and adverbial modifiers, descended from main clauses.

The Title and the Paragraph as Text Constituting Units

    SIRANUSH HOVHANNISYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

The text is a way of expressing and alienating the author’s thoughts. From this perspective thought is some kind of supercontent which is embedded in linguistic forms. As a complex structure, the text implies in its structure units of relatively small size. Paragraph appears to be such a unit. The paragraph is a carrier of a content node with the help of which text supercontent is completed for perceivers.
Another text unit is the title which can be absent in some texts. If the text has a title it means the text is specifically-targeted one, that is, in this case, the author defines supercontent for perceivers. But if the text does not have a title, so it is free targeted text and to some extent, perceivers are free in the selection of supercontent. On content coverage title and paragraph are opposed to each other. The title, despite its relatively compact shape, has a broader content whereas the paragraph despite its broader shape has a relatively smaller content.

    Abstract

The contribution of academician G. Jahukyan to comparative-historical study of the Armenian language can be characterized in broad lines as follows: a) application of new principles of describing and presenting comparative material, b) a thorough examination of the comparative grammar and all diachronic processes of Armenian, including the establishment of a number of phonological and morphological general patterns as well as many etymological observations, c) periodization of the whole pre-written history of Armenian, with the systematic description of reconstructable linguistic features characterizing the periods, d) a thorough areal characterization of Armenian in relation to the other dialects of Proto-Indo-European. Besides, G. Jahukyan made an important contribution to the Indo-European Linguistics, offering new solutions to a number of disputable problems, and to the study of the question of distant linguistic relationship as well.

The Category of Politeness and Apology

    SHUSHANIK PARONYAN, NARE TAMOYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In the present article an attempt is made to highlight the peculiarities of the correlation between the category of politeness and apology in the process of human interaction. It is stated that politeness and apology are marked by structural, semantic and functional manifoldness and, furthermore, they are aimed at the creation, maintenance or restoration of harmony in human relations. The main aim of the article is to lead the reader to the idea that although politeness and apology have certain crossing points, they are relatively autonomous entities in the process of communication. This can be explained by the fact that not all acts of apology should be viewed from the standpoint of politeness, and politeness, in its turn, as a manifestation of discourse policy, is peculiar not only to the speech acts of apology but also to a range of other speech acts. Interesting observations are also made about the correlation between sincerity and politeness in communicative situations containing acts of apology.

The Multi-feature Classification of Armenian Dialects

    GAGHTUHI HANANYAN
    View PDF
    Abstract

In the seventies of the previous century, academician G. Jahukyan put
forward the principle of multi-feature classification of Armenian dialects. In contrast to mono-feature classification, the given approach defines exact mathematical indices which not only demarcate the subordination limits of dialectal units but also reveal the interrelationships of Armenian dialects. The intermediary chains are distinguished which express transitional features. As the problem of the Armenian dialects is complex and diverse, we can specify the choice and number of about 100 characters. The main principles of multi-feature classification open new horizons not only for the research of the Armenian dialects but for the studies of the Armenian language as well.
