    Manuk Abeghyan's "Russian-Armenian Legal Manual Dictionary"

    Abstract

    "Russian-Armenian Legal Manual Dictionary" is the first professional dictionary related to Russian, which is a unique example of a collective intellectual work. Prior to the creation of this dictionary, there was no legal dictionary. Grabar Old Armenian was poor in legal terms which could be used by the authors, thus, it was necessary to create new words.
    More than 360 of the 1324 word-units in the dictionary (according to our calculations - AA) are either new terms: neologisms or new formations (abbreviations of often used words, modifications) or archaic words.
    Among the most important virtues of the dictionary are:
    a) The authors worked to put an Armenian word in front of each Russian term which will accurately express the meaning of the Russian term.
    b) The compilers of the dictionary, as much as is possible, avoided translating several Russian terms with the same Armenian word.
    "Russian-Armenian Legal Manual Dictionary" (1919) could stand the test of time, greatly contributing to the development of Armenian legal thought. Many words came into use, such as:

    The language of the individual in the paralles of Abeghyan’s language standardization

    Abstract
    1. Abeghyan is a member of tne youth grammar school. According to him, the laws of language are similar to the lows of nature and society. It changes, and the individual maks those changes.  Every individual, motivated by the need of the moment, changes the language, which can lead to the change of the normative system of the language. The famous Armenologist considers the language of an individual as a concrete expression of an abstract. M. Abeghyan’s theory of individual languages is directly releted to the problems of modern general linguistics, such as   the origin of language, the development of the pre-language, the emergence of  related languages.

    The great lingvist connects the change of language whit an individual’s education, his knowledge of the word, language education, language taste, cultural values.

    1. Abeghyan is also an outstanding personality of the Armenian people, as a linguist, as a scientist, as a theacher and pedagogue, as a literary critic. He is rightly <<The giant (oak) of Armenian linguistics>>.

    Abeghyan’s Interpretation of Verb Moods in Eastern Armenian, Considered from the Viewpoint of Modern Linguistics

    Abstract

    It is argued that the traditional interpretation (proposed by M. Abeghyan) of the so-called Optative mood (ըղձական եղանակ) and Hypothetical/Conditional mood (ենթադրական/պայմանական եղանակ) in Modern Eastern Armenian, is objectionable from the standpoint of General Linguistics and Linguistic Typology. The point is that the Optative of Modern Eastern Armenian combines most of the semantic functions of the typologically known Subjunctive and Optative. Therefore, it is not an Optative in the proper sense of the word. It would be more appropriate to characterize it as Subjunctive-Optative (ստորադասաըղձական).

    As to the կ(ը)- future (traditionally misinterpreted as Hypothetical/Conditional mood), it is actually no different from the Future Indicative in other languages from the semantic-functional point of view. As pointed out by a number of scholars, the future tense is never a purely temporal category; futurity necessarily includes an element of prediction or some related modal notion. Accordingly, the կ(ը)- future in Modern Eastern Armenian also includes both temporal and modal semantic components, the proportion of which may vary depending on the specific context and the person of the verb form. However, the corresponding past forms of the կ(ը)- future mainly function as Conditional in Modern Eastern Armenian.

    Methodical principles of teaching Ancient Armenian language in textbooks of M. Abeghyan

    Abstract

    In the history of Armenian linguistics, Manuk Abeghyan is known primarily for his theoretical innovative monographs and textbooks devoted to the study and teaching of the grammar of the modern Armenian language, but in this article we prove that his works and textbooks of the Ancient Armenian language are just as valuable, and most importantly, as innovative, like all his philological heritage. Manuk Abeghyan was a talented linguist and researcher and and at the same time he was a great educator, teacher, for whom it was extremely important to teach children and the younger generation the Armenian literary language in all its forms - ancient Armenian, modern Armenian and its dialects, so that the new generation could read and understand ancient manuscripts, translate them. In textbooks of the ancient Armenian language, M. Abeghyan has always been a supporter of new principles of teaching. He was the first to begin teaching the ancient Armenian language with lessons on conjugating verbs, emphasizing the fact that the verb has a main function in the process of speech formation; if the student knows how to conjugate a verb, knows its moods, tenses, aspects, then he will be able to form correct speech and correctly translate different texts.

    Functional-semantic characteristics of plant names used in the folk songbook of Komitas Vardapet and Manuk Abeghyan

    Abstract

    The study of plant names is important for the general study of the vocabulary of the Armenian language, as well as to recognize the vegetation of a given area, the linguistic thinking of the population, the areal dialect language, phrases and folklore formulas, some realities of life, etc.Information about the flora is very useful for the etymology of place names.

    As a result of the research, we found out that thanks to the fruitful collaboration of Komitas Vardapet and Manuk Abeghyan, simple rural songs of the Armenian people are combined with their variants. The folk songbook “A Thousand and One Songs” contains the dialect vocabulary of the Armenian language and many plant names that characterize the lush flora of Armenia. Plant names have different frequency of use. The names of apple and apricot fruits, the name of a rose flower, and words denoting the general concepts of “tree” and “flower” are highlighted with great frequency.

    Manuk Abeghyan, a Distinguished Theorist of the Grammar of the Eastern Armenian Literary Language

    Abstract

    The article addresses fundamental issues in the grammar of this language. Manuk Abeghyan, nearly a century ago, developed a scientifically grounded doctrine based on the logical and semasiological principles of linguistics, particularly focusing on the definition of a word and considering its semantics. In this regard, he treats participles and gerunds as separate words, that is, as verbal nouns and verbal adjectives.

    The voice of a verb is determined by contrasting transitivity and intransitivity. With the help of verbal infixes, new words are created and the voice of the verb changes, accordingly. In the paradigmatic series, he identifies five cases, and in the syntagmatic series, eight. This work is of great importance both in lexicology and in the grammar of the Eastern Armenian literary language. Renowned scholars E. Aghayan and G. Jahukyan, based on the theory of structural linguistics, developed M. Abeghyan's theory in problematic areas concerning verbal nouns, verbal infixes, verbal moods, categories of voice and aspect, and the issues of the number of cases, etc. Unfortunately, the scientific achievements of these outstanding scholars have not found their rightful place in the normative grammar of the Eastern Armenian literary language.
