    Assyrian Edition of Agathangelos

    Abstract

    The Assyrian edition of Agathangelos was created by order of the Assyrian Church of the Akobikians during the Armenian-Assyrian church rapprochement on an anti-Chalcedonian basis when both churches under the rule of the Arab Caliphate were supposed to form a single anti-Byzantine religious front. The original was created immediately in the Assyrian language, without the Armenian original, on the basis of the Armenian-Greek written, as well as the Armenian oral sources. The article notes that the unknown Assyrian author probably had close ties with Bardzr Hayk, his spiritual, cultural, and ecclesiastical environment, as evidenced by his "local patriotism." The original was created in the calendar of the Akobikyan church. To perpetuate the memory of St. Gregory, around the 8th century (within 711-713).

    “Comparative analysis of “Daredevils of Sasun” and “The Song of the Nibelungs” Epics

    Abstract

    The article deals with the problems of comparative epic studies. The Armenian epic "Sasna Tsrer" and the German epic "The Song of the Nibelungs" have much in common, which is manifested thanks to universal and rare motives. The universal motives are considered to be the miraculous birth of the hero, the marriage and matchmaking of the hero, the magical invulnerability of the hero, the warrior-woman, etc., which are often found in the world epic, as well as in the German and Armenian epics. The semantics of the final episodes of the Armenian and German epics are especially rich from a mythological point of view. In them, the motive reaches its apogee, according to which "The essence of a heroic tale is grief and destruction" (M.Steblin–Kamensky). The end of the "Song of the Nibelungs" symbolizes the end of the Burgundian dynasty. Agravakar (Raven Rock) becomes a multi-valued symbol of the completion of the history of Great Armenia in the epic "Sasna Tsrer". The author also considers the motive of epic guilt, which is rarely found in the world epic, and is of key importance in Armenian and German epics.

    The Clash of Identity and Cultural Tradition in American Migrant Literature

    Abstract

    The purpose of the article is to analyze the peculiarities of ethnic memory, eternal return and the American literary crater in the context of migrant literature. The article presents the clash of ethnic culture and super-culture motivated by ethnogenesis. The concepts of longing, identity, belonging, multiculturalism, otherness and exile help to reveal a number of psychological realities which the emigrant faces becoming a migrant. The preservation of the national genetic code is one of the most important issues for immigrants in the new environment. The article presents the types of migration based on the motivation, for example, voluntary or forced. In this case, the mental state of people is especially different, because the differences between migrations are in contrast with each other. Voluntary migrants have a clear motivation, certain plans and goals. On the contrary, forced migrants, as a rule, are demotivated, move against their will, have no plans, ideas about their own future and have no reason to continue living elsewhere. They are characterized by an uncertain and unclear condition.

    Old Armenian voiced spirant վ (v) (diachronic and achronic aspects)

    Abstract

    In the historical-comparative Armenian studies the following prototypes are reconstructed for the Old Armenian վ (v): *ṷ, *u, *p and *ksṷ. As a matter of fact there are two phonemic prototypes, if we take into account that according to the concept accepted by the comparative Indo-European studies the *ṷ and *u are the positional variations of the same phoneme and one sound combination. The quantitative ratio of վ (v) with the upper mentioned prototypes, as well as the genealogical relations of *ṷ/*u with labiodental [v]-s of the other Indo-European languages on one hand, and the corresponding typological equivalents of վ (v) loan words made from old languages (Indo-European and non Indo-European) on the other hand, show that the main prototype of the Armenian վ (v) has been the Indo-European bilabial semi-vowel *ṷ. The relationships of վ (v) with the other prototypes are comparatively later phenomena and are mainly due various phonetic change processes.

    How to “Translate” Time

    Abstract

    The article makes an analysis of the issue of transferring of one of the phenomena presenting difficulty in translation, the so-called temporal space. In simultaneous translation, the author and translator are “contemporaries”. This fact facilitates the work of the translator. And if the translator and the author are not “contemporaries”, and the author has worked on the topics of his time and in the language of his time, the translator faces quite a difficult task, i.e. to translate it into the modern language making an attempt to convey to the reader the old style of the work. The use of obsolete words, historicisms, semantic and grammatical archaisms may contribute to the solution of this problem. When transferring the national-historical realities, one should choose the principle of translation, which will contribute to the transfer of temporal space. Neologisms and words of high style created by the translator can contribute to the solution of the considered problem. Of course, the talent of the translator, the good knowledge of the language of the original and the environment shown in the work are important along with this.

    Linguo-Stylistic Means in Patrick Suskind’s Novel “Perfume”

    Abstract

    The purpose of the article is to study the linguistic and stylistic devices of the novel by the German prose writer and playwright Patrick Suskind "Perfume", their features, as well as speech structures characteristic of different eras. In the course of the study analytical and comparative methods have been applied. The novel “Perfume” got well-known not only due to originality of plot and structure of its narration, in the base of which lies the interlacement of the postmodernist and existentialist novels’ principles, but also by the presence of varied linguo-stylistic means carrying out in the novel most different functions. Taking as a structural-semantic base for his novel the metaphor “smell”, as a conceptual unit, P.Suskind creates his authorial neologisms, formed by synaesthesical combining practically of all sense organs of a man. With the help of such a “matrix” the author succeeded to “compose” the image of the main character – Grenouille, as well as of other characters of the novel. Playing up the linguistic styles of the characters not only with the help of dialogs, but also of their inner “monologues”, the author realizes at the same time several functional tasks: the substantiation of their deeds, the bringing to light the pivotal essence of novel’s intrigue, shocking the reader by means of contrasting opposition of beauty and evil deed. The main task of the novel is the awareness of one's own status, the drama of one's own position, the tragedy in the world he created.

    The Typological Peculiarities of the Negative Adverbs of the German Language

    Abstract

    In this article the typological peculiarities of the negative adverbs of modern German are presented in comparison with the corresponding facts of the
    Armenian language, which acts here as an etalon language. Negative adverbs are lexicogrammatical means of expressing negation, which are remarkable because their presence in
    the composition of a sentence contributes to the manifestation of peculiar features of the formation of negative sentences in different languages, as well as at different stages of the development of one language. It is shown that by the abovementioned means of expressing negation the mononegative type of the modern German language is opposed to the polynegative
    type of the Armenian language. The mononegative system of the German language is usually
    explained by the general tendency towards the maximum possible combination of grammatical structures in this language. In German negative adverbs may function in a sentence as
    adverbial modifier of time, place and manner and give a negative meaning to the affirmative
    form of the predicate and at the same time to the whole statement, performing the function of
    general negation, while the equivalent means in the Armenian language are used with the
    same function, as a rule, with negative forms of the verb and act as a complex whole. In Armenian negative adverbs are the main negative elements in a sentence, since their presence
    necessitates the use of negative forms of the verb, while the opposite fact is not typical here.

    Some Features of the Coverage of Crimes during the War in the Context of the Karabakh Conflict

    Abstract

    For professional and targeted reporting of war crimes of the parties during wars, armed conflicts, crimes against
    humanity, etc., not only professional knowledge and skills in the field of journalism but
    also certain levels of professional training are required, including a high level of awareness of the historical background of the conflict, political events, the activities of the
    international organizations, the sphere of jurisdiction, knowledge of various branches of
    international law, knowledge of the possibilities of journalistic work in the international
    courts, accreditation procedures, work style, forms, etc.
    The mentioned above knowledge can help in terms of comparison of facts, initiate
    investigations, identify issues, inform the public about what is observable to all, and, the
    most important, this basis can become a guide in shaping new views and perceptions of
    the conflict and its geopolitical processes. The article deals with the research topic in the
    context of the Karabakh conflict, in particular, the 44-day war.

    On genre-format approaches in the process of defining the phenomenon of "multimedia journalism"

    Abstract

     The article examines the terms
    “Internet journalism” (digital journalism), “convergent journalism” and “multimedia
    journalism”, often used as “synonymous terms” to denote new forms of journalistic
    activity, in connection with the use of the Internet by journalists as a platform for disseminating information. The traditional genres of journalism are being “revised” to
    reveal their potential “coverage” of multimedia phenomena. It is proposed to define the
    concept of “multimedia journalism” through the prism of genre-format approaches, as
    despite the existing methodological differences in the scientific literature regarding
    genre-forming and format-forming features, the mutually transitive nature of the processes of multimedization and the new genre-format solutions have become obvious.
