TABOO WORDS AS A SOURCE DOMAIN FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTENSIFIERS

Abstract

The present paper discusses the semantic and functional peculiarities of taboo words serving as a source domain for the development of intensifiers. The study shows that due to their marked pragmatic power and the processes of desemanticization and grammaticalization taboo words can gradually develop into adverbial items expressing a more grammatical and pragmatic function of intensification.
