Instructions for Authors: Introduction

The YSU Journal of International Affairs is an international, peer-reviewed, biannual academic journal that publishes high-quality, original research. The journal is published both in print and online open-access versions by the Publishing House of Yerevan State University. The open-access publication enables your article to be freely accessible online after publication, increasing the visibility, readership, and impact of your research. Please note that this journal publishes manuscripts only in English.

There are no submission fees, publication fees, or page charges for this journal.

The YSU Journal of International Affairs accepts the following types of articles:

2. Discussion articles (occasionally)

Preparing the Article: General Guidelines

Articles should be structured in the following order: title page, abstract, keywords, introduction, main text, conclusion, acknowledgments, and bibliography (in alphabetical order). Papers are accepted only in English. American English spelling and punctuation are preferred.

Research articles should be between 6000 and 8000 words, including abstract, footnotes, references, and bibliography.

Abstract of 150-200 words.

Keywords: between 4 and 6 words.

The YSU Journal of International Affairs may occasionally publish shorter essays and discussion articles of up to 3,000 words from prominent scholars, practitioners, and policymakers in international affairs. This will feature high-quality, engaging commentary, opinion, and provocative pieces presented in a variety of styles. Unlike traditional academic articles, these pieces are designed to be compelling and creative in tone, structure, and content. This section offers readers thought-provoking and concise works that spark engagement and reflection. Please note that submissions to this section are not peer-reviewed and should not be considered original research publications. However, they must adhere to the journal’s style and guidelines. Previously published work or manuscripts under review elsewhere cannot be accepted. All submissions are subject to the Editor-in-Chief’s discretion. Discussion articles should be between 1000 and 3000 words and contain an unstructured abstract of up to 200 words.

Book reviews should not exceed 1300 words.

Headings: Headings and subheadings should be concise and engaging. Initial letters should be capitalized. Headings in the journal are not numbered. Headings and subheadings should be Bold. Font size for the article title: 16. Subheadings’ font-size: 14.

The Journal requires the use of Unicode fonts only.

Font: Times New Roman; Font size: 12pt, Space between lines: 1.5;

Footnote size: 10pt; Space between lines: 1.

Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format, A4 pages; normal margins.

Abbreviations: Commonly recognized acronyms, such as EU, US, and UN, may be used. Abbreviations should only be introduced if the term appears more than once. When first mentioned, the full name should be provided, followed by the capitalized abbreviation in parentheses (e.g., The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)).

Quotation marks: Please use double quotation marks, except where “a quotation is ‘within’ a quotation.” Please note that long quotations should be indented. Quotations that are longer than three lines should be formatted as block quotations. They should be introduced with a colon, followed by a line space, indented, and concluded with another line space.

Numbers up to twenty should be written out in words. For numbers above twenty, numerals should be used.

Foreign words and terms such as coup d’état, auctoritas, Ex gracia, Modus vivendi should be italicized. Italicization should be used exclusively for titles and words or phrases in a language other than the primary language of the text.

Before submitting the manuscript, authors should ensure that it adheres to the journal’s guidelines, article format, and reference style. Manuscripts that do not adhere to the Journal’s style guidelines will be returned to the author for amendment.

References and Citations:

The Journal uses the Chicago Manual of Style for Notes and Bibliography. Please use this reference guide when preparing your article. Please use numbered footnotes, not endnotes. Footnotes may also be used for additional text or explanations.

Other-language work references should be translated with original language reference in square brackets […]. Author details: All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation, ORCiDs and Emails on the cover page of the manuscript. One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author. Authors’ affiliations are the affiliations where the research was conducted. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after the manuscript is accepted.

Biographical note: Please provide a brief biographical note for each author (no more than 100 words).

Funding details: Please supply all details required by your funding and grant-awarding bodies as follows: “This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [number xxx]”.

Disclosure Statement and Conflict of Interests: This statement is meant to acknowledge any financial or non-financial interests that may have resulted from the direct applications of the research. If there are no relevant competing interests to disclose, authors should include a statement within the article, such as: “The authors declare that there are no conflict interests to disclose.” Each author must disclose any financial interests or connections, whether direct or indirect, or any other circumstances that could raise concerns about potential bias in the reported work or the stated conclusions, implications, or opinions.

Policy on AI Tools

The YSU Journal of International Affairs maintains the following policy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools:

Authorship Requirements: AI tools cannot fulfill authorship requirements as they are non-legal entities. Consequently, they cannot assume responsibility for the submitted work or declare the presence or absence of conflicts of interest. Hence, articles generated using artificial intelligence and containing plagiarism will be rejected for publication.

Disclosure of AI Tool Usage: Authors who utilize AI tools at any stage of manuscript preparation must disclose this information in their Disclosure Statement. They must specify which AI tools were used, how they were employed, in what capacity and proportions, and the sections of the manuscript where they were applied.

Author Responsibility: Authors remain fully accountable for the content of their manuscripts, including any sections produced or assisted by AI tools. They are also responsible for any breaches of academic integrity, ethics, and guidelines.
