The paper deals with the functional characteristics of English noun phrases, namely those of N + N and N + of + N types. The components of these phrases are morphologically unmarked, therefore the functional differences between them can be revealed on the semantic level. Each of the phrases under study can be attributive and appositive, hence these phrases are viewed in the context of syntactical polysemy and homonymy.
