The Coming of Age Novel in Ukrainian Translation: Challenges and Solutions

The present paper makes at attemp to analyse the genre of the coming of age novel in the light of modern translation studies. The research is based on the Ukrainian translation of the coming of age novel “The Queen’s Gambit” by Walter Tevis. The dominant genre peculairities such as the issue of upbringing, symbolism realized in the depiction of chess game and the author`s peculiarities of character portrayal have been analyzed. Contextual substitution, transposition, concretization, omission, addition, antonymic translation are considered to be the dominant translation transformations used by the translator to convey the genre specificity of the coming of age novel.
